"The Fall of the Great Lights", Concept
Photo-Paint
May 2009

Done in Corel Photopaint X3

The idea for this concept is not new, I've already tried to draw a sketch of this dramatic moment many years ago. At that time I wanted to paint a picture like this on canvas in acrylic colours, however, I have failed. Exactly said: in the perspective. My intention was to manifest a moment of supernatural (magic) elemental power, which both fell The Great Lights of the world - long before there was the sun and moon. Both lights were placed on columns which were placed confronted to both poles of the world. At this time the fictive world was a disc, so a representation of both columns would have been absolutely plausible in one single picture pane.
I experimented with the four-vanishing-point perspective which already M.C.Escher had used. Besides, zenith and nadir are incorporated in one single pane. Because the vanishing points admit no straight lines which run up to the vanishing points, I had to bend all grid lines - the calculations for it were incredibly costly.
